REYES RETURNS

"February 28, 2008
Jason Reyes - the Quarterback who took two leagues by storm by leading the Rebels to a championship game in the spring of 2006, and nearly doing the same in the fall of the same year, returns for another run at a title.
Reyes, who was in Florida for 2007, has been working out with the New York Spartans Semi Pro program - members of the Gridiron Elite. Jason is in a competition for the starting QB position with another former Rebel quarterback, Frank Rue, Jr. The Spartans are scheduled to participate in the first Gridiron Elite Football tournament being played at Evander Childs High School. Reyes is expected to play with the Spartans in the spring, and return to compete for the fall QB position with the Rebels Jr. pro team.
HC Baxter, of the Jr Pro division, states “Jason is a natural leader, with qualitites that cannot be taught at the QB position. Working with the Spartans will be a great way to shed the rust off of his game, and will make him ready to run at the ECFL title this fall.”
Reyes will compete in Rebel camp with QB Kaliph Daley, who is slotted to start at the position for the Rebels in the fall. Baxter states “they are both good athletes that bring interesting qualities to our offense. The competition should be a good one to watch, but whoever earns the job, will be taking our team to the title game.”
Defensive Coordinatior Kevin Pryor though is pushing for Daley to remain on the defensive side of the ball, leaving Reyes as the starting QB. “Jason has a stronger arm. I have seen this kid put the ball on a dime at 70 yards. Not many kids can do that at this level.”
Can Reyes compete? Is Daley up to the challenge of earning his starting job? Will Daley be moved back to a starting DB, leaving Reyes as the starter?
Stay Tuned!!!"

Overabundance.

Usually, I don't care that I don't have a job.

However, when:

Kanye West/NERD/Lupe (even thought it's soldout right now)
JiggaMan and Mary J Blige
Alicia Keys
and Katt Williams

ARE ALL ON TOUR...

SOMETHING HAS GOT TO GIVE.

-franso

PS- if anything, i'll see you @ the A.Keys of course ;)

La Borinqueña

Whose fault is it that I sometimes feel more interested (or intrigued) by Black History than I am by Latin American History?
And is this a bad thing?
Or better yet, is my wondering a waste of time?
Could it be said that Black History is MY history as well?
Or is it because as a child in the US, history classes consist of George Washington, the Boston Tea Party, the cotton gin (which is CRAZY glorified even though it REVIVED slavery), Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr, and Malcolm X?
Nothing wrong with learning about the above, nothing at all- it IS the American history... But with Latinos being the largest minority in America, wouldn't it be right that we learn about Latinos as well?!
Did I ONCE learn about Jose Marti as a child? Once I once asked whether I thought PR should remain a commonwealth, gain independence, or become a state?

La Borinqueña
La tierra de Borinquen
donde he nacido yo

In elementary school, before each assembly, we sang the Star Spangled Banner, Lift Every Voice And Sing... and La Borinqueña. A song for each of us, right? Nobody knew the words to La Borinqueña. We were all under the age of 13, we didn't take Spanish, and everyone would look at me because I tried, and knew the words as best as I could. A fascination with Frances (and about 3 others) because she knew the lyrics to that song in her language. Then there was the time where I was chosen to conduct the entire auditorium in singing the song because Ms. Davies, the teacher who previously conducted, left the school.

Today in Latino/a Literature and Culture, we discussed nationalism, the struggles of Cuba and Puerto Rico, and Spain's image during the 19th century.
I love La Borinqueña... but I got upset. Why the HELL did they even have us sing that song? A mockery, really, the kids just making sounds that resembled what the song really said, laughing when we sang "OH!OH!OH!OH!"... but can you blame them? Why didn't anyone TEACH US WHAT THE SONG MEANT? WHAT THE SONG SAID? WHAT THE SONG WAS ABOUT? WHY WE SANG IT?

Exactly what was the purpose?

I know the world is big and you can't focus on EVERYTHING, but I feel like we enter college cheated. I clearly remember being TIRED OF LEARNING ABOUT MLK JR. AND ROSA PARKS. "Again!?!?!" I would whine, tired of coloring pictures of MLK JR's face in Social Studies. Where would we be without him, I understand, I get it and I love EVERYTHING he stood for- but is it cute that I can school a black person on his history- yet I find myself mouth closed and eager to hear about my OWN history? We should be taught a bit of everything, it's only fair.

I've said it before, and I'll definitely say it again: When I have kids, they're gonna know about themselves-EVERYTHING. They're gonna know about things I, sadly, don't even know about my history yet. They're gonna know who Christopher Columbus was- and how he brought disease to America, how he and his men raped the Native Americans. They're gonna know about Abraham Lincoln, how he was so great- but also how much he contradicted himself concerning slavery. They're gonna think the commercials advertising Puerto Rico are cool- but they'll also be aware of the people who fought on that island before the Starbucks and Targets sprouted up. They'll love everyone and know that Black History, in a way, is ours too. They'll pay extra attention when taught about slavery because I'll teach them at an early age (like I wasn't) that THOSE ARE OUR ANCESTORS too. Shit, they'll probably get scolded for not putting their right hand above their hearts during "The National Anthem"- but maybe I just got carried away, I don't know.

Whoo child.

I might struggle to stay awake in my History of Modern Latin America and Latino/a Literature and Culture classes, but I'm still learning. And if you wanna learn, or teach for that matter, then let's talk.

Artist of the Week: MYA

yes.

After a very enjoyable conversation concerning summer jams of the past, Geezy and I stumbled upon our love for "Case of the Ex" by MYA. This then turned into my going back in time and remembering every MYA song I love and how, while everyone jumped on the "Fear of Flying" bandwagon, I felt alone in the "Moodring" fan club. Nevertheless, I DLed a couple of MYA songs this weekend and I must say, dammit it feels good to bring back songs you temporarily forgot existed due to playing them out in the past.

MYA's the shit, always has been. I'll always be mad at her not reaching the level of respect she deserves!

So! In celebration of my Artist of the Week... I present to you some MYA videos- in case you forgot who always holds it down, whether you're noticing or not.

MYA- FREE (The breakdancing scene? Cmon.)

MYA- CASE OF THE EX (7th grade summer, couldn't tell me NOTHIN')

MYA-MOVE ON (front like you don't remember "Whose drawers are these? You know I wear a size 4..." and Silkk the Shockerrr!)

Oh, and somebody PLEASE get me them 2 hideously huge and awkward pigtails in the FREE video for my birthday. Thanks.

Amy, Amy, Amy...

Amy Winehouse knows me so well-At least that's how it feels.

Current issue on the minds of Franso & Becca:

"It's bricked up in my head, it's shoved under my bed
and I question myself again: what is it 'bout men?
My destructive side has grown a mile wide
and I question myself again: what is it 'bout men?"

Seriously, why are we getting old? Old in every sense of the word.

AND... WHAT IS IT ABOUT MEN?!

no idea what i'm talking about? Ok, so then keep it moving, it's gonna be OK.

=)

-franso

Flashing... Lights??

*sigh*

the main reason why i'm late for posting this video up is because I WAS HELLA CONFIDENT that this was not the official video for the hottest track on the Graduation album. i SWORE that this 3 second video was NOT it. that this video in such slow motion to the point where i'm just ANNOYED was NOT it. that watching this girls body jiggle and bounce all up in my face was not it. me disturbed and pissed by a scene reminiscent of the killing scene in "Secret Window".... could NOT be my feelings after watching his new video.

sure, sure, sure, it's different Jennifer! sure it's cool the whole "but i never thought that you would take it this far" as she kills him... BUT NO.

the song reminds me of driving on the freakin westside highway late at night with the windows down city lights everywhere, of the freakin paparazzi, etc! etc!

and then. IT JUST ENDS.

cmon kanye, why so underdeveloped?!

Greetings from MD/ Grammy Nods!

3:02AM... Hello Maryland!

Been here since 11:20-somethin! With my boo Shadae!

Feels just as weird as I thought it would-lol

But anyways, here are the Grammy nominees... and MY predictions!

Record of the Year:
Beyonce- Irreplaceable
Amy Winehouse- Rehab
Foo Fighters- The Pretender
Rihanna- Umbrella
Justin Timberlake- What Goes Around... Comes Around

I think... BEYONCE! that record took over the world. Rehab is my 2nd choice.

Song of the Year:
Before He Cheats (Carrie Underwood)
Hey There Delilah (Plain White Ts)
Like A Star (Corinne Bailey Rae)
Rehab (Amy Winehouse)
Umbrella (Rihanna)

[*First off, I was mad lost trying to understand the difference between Song of the Year and Record of the Year. Record of the Year is for the artist, the producer(s), recording engineer(s) and/or mixer(s), if other than the artist. Song of the Year is for the songwriter.]

I think... I'm undecisive on this one. Shadae thinks it's gonna be Umbrella! ugh!

Best New Artist:
Feist
Ledisi
Paramore
Taylor Swift
Amy Winehouse

I think... that if Amy doesn't win... the entire Grammy's situation is BS!!!!

Best Female Pop Vocal Performance:
Christina Aguilera- Candyman
Feist- 1234
Fergie- Big Girls Don't Cry
Nelly Furtado- Say It Right
Amy Winehouse- Rehab

I think...Christina Aguilera should win. Vocals? Are you serious? lol Nelly Furtado? Clearly they ran out of people. Watch Amy Winehouse win though...

Best Male Pop Vocal Performance:
Michael Buble- Everything
John Mayer- Belief
Paul McCartney- Dance Tonight
Seal- Amazing
Justin Timberlake- What Goes Around... Comes Around.

I think... I have no comment on this one because I only know one of these songs, the Justin one, lol.

Best Pop Vocal Album:
Bon Jovi- Lost Highway
Feist- The Reminder
Paul McCartney- Almost Full Memory
Maroon 5- It Won't Be Soon Before Long
Amy Winehouse- Back to Black

I think... Amy needs to steal the freakin' show! (Besides, the Maroon 5 album wasn't as good as the first, no sir ree.)

Best Female R&B Vocal Performance:
Jill Scott- Hate On Me
Fantasia- When I See You
Chrisette Michele- If I Had My Way
Mary J. Blige- Just Fine
Alicia Keys- No One

I think... Alicia Keys got that in the bag, the world went WILD! lol that was a hit, she deserve it!

Best Male R&B Vocal Performance:
Raheem DeVaughn- Woman
Musiq- B.U.D.D.Y
Tank- Please Don't Go
Ne-Yo- Because of You
Prince- Future Baby Mama

I Think... Prince will probably get it because he's Prince... BUT NE-YO DESERVES IT!!!!

Ok, there are like a GAZILLION categories and I'm tired!

Those are my predictions so far!

Can't wait to watch emmmm

Til Monday!

Farewell Chickadees... Headed to Maryland for the weekend!

now THIS is gonna be interesting.

I haven't been in the state of Maryland since the very moment that I left.

December 21, 2006 I believe.

It's gonna feel weird going back to a place that I genuinely miss- yet was the EXACT location of the lowest moment, the depression of my life.

Gosh.

I can't wait though! I just wanna hurry up and get there, hang out with some terps!

Um... pop culture-wise... everyone is STILL a hot mess, everyone is STILL going to rehab, and THE GRAMMY'S ARE SUNDAY NIGHT!

IF I MISS EM I'LL DIE!

AMY WINEHOUSE NEEDS TO WIN EVERYTHING! AND GET BETTER!!!

-franso

PS- Congrats to the Ru-Newark Male Basketball team for its win against poor Montclair! :-D
Good game! My first college game-EVER.
I know, I'm pathetic... BUT THINGS ARE CHANGING AROUND HERE!
NO- I am SO serious though... ;)
